Choosing which boots to buy can be a big decision and Hi-Tec Europe share some of their best secrets to selecting the best fitting boots.

Different Types of Boots

There are four different types of boots/styles generally available:

Backpacking Boots – extremely durable, these boots are designed to endure the toughest terrains out there. Backpacking boots offer extra grip, are fully waterproof too, and are designed for a tough hike with extra stability and reliability to get you across any rocks, streams, and whatever else you may encounter along your walk.

Light Hiking Boots – also great for any terrain, they offer extra comfort to ensure that you do not suffer any irritation on ankles or soles while hiking. They are also super breathable and prevent sweat build-up, allowing for a more comfortable fit.

Walking Boots – waterproof and durable, a good pair of walking boots which is breathable, which are perfect for dog walking, and flatter terrains.

Walking Shoes – lightweight and offering extra comfort, these waterproof boots are great for any walking occasion.

Things to keep in mind when buying your boots

The right socks – make sure to take a pair of your hiking socks along with you when trying on your boots for optimal fit! Good hiking socks are made with moisture wicking, which helps to draw the sweat away from the feet, ensuring better comfort and are slightly thicker than regular socks.

Try boots on at the end of the day – as feet tend to swell as the day progresses and by the end of the day will give you a more accurate fit.

Lace well and move - Make sure to lace the boots tightly, wiggle your feet around in the boot and adjust the boot’s tongue to be exactly in the centre. Move your heel backward and forwards and take a good walk around the store to get a better feel for the pair.

Spend time in your boots – once you have selected the perfect pair, you need to break them in before attempting any hills or walks. Wear them around the house, up and down the stairs and around the garden to get your foot acclimatised!

Now, you are ready to start tackling some of those hills and walks that are calling your name!
