What to pack for your long-distance walk/s in Scotland?

You’ve been training for weeks, walking further and further each day, practicing carrying your weighted pack, tackling stairs and slopes, and more! First, we have to say well done, the training part is definitely the hardest – but all that training is going to pay off soon when you get to spend time taking on the beautiful hills of Scotland!

From the rugged Highlands to the stunning coastline, there are endless trails to explore in Scotland and if you're planning a long-distance walk, it's important to pack the right gear to make your experience as pleasant as possible.

Here's a comprehensive packing list that will help you get started:

1.       Backpack

Your backpack is one of the two most important items you’ll need, so it's important to choose one that's the right size and fit for you.

You'll need a backpack that's big enough to carry everything you need, but not so big that it's too heavy to carry. A backpack with a waist belt and chest strap will help to distribute the weight evenly and prevent back pain.

2.       Boots

Boots are the second most important item you’ll need – and for good reason. They'll protect your feet from the elements, provide ankle support, and help you avoid blisters.

Consider -

Ankle support: Hiking boots should provide good ankle support, especially if you're going to be hiking on uneven terrain.

Water resistance: Hiking boots should be water resistant, especially if you're going to be hiking in wet or rainy conditions.

Weight: Hiking boots should be lightweight so that they don't add too much weight to your pack.

Fit: Hiking boots should fit snugly, but not too tightly. You should have enough room to wiggle your toes, but the boots should not be loose enough to slide around on your feet.

Comfort: Hiking boots should be comfortable to wear, even after walking for several miles.

If you're serious about hiking and walking, it's important to invest in a good pair of boots. By choosing the right boots, you can help ensure that your hike is a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

3.       Clothing

You'll need to pack a variety of clothing for a variety of different potential climates in Scotland. The weather can change quickly, so it's important to be prepared for anything. Here are some essential items to pack:

-          A waterproof jacket and pants

-          A fleece or down jacket

-          Long-sleeved shirts and T-shirts

-          Shorts and trousers

-          Hiking socks (a few extra pairs in case your feet get wet)

-          A hat and gloves

-          Sleeping Bag and Tent, cooking apparatus/utensils, etc

If you're planning on camping as part of your long-distance walking adventure, you'll need to pack a sleeping bag and tent as well as cooking apparatus and utensils, etc.

Choose a sleeping bag that's rated for the coldest weather you'll be expecting. A tent that's lightweight and easy to set up is ideal for long-distance walks.

4.       Other Gear

In addition to clothing and shelter, you'll also need to pack a variety of other gear for your long-distance walk in Scotland. Here are some essential items:

-          Hiking poles

-          A water bottle or hydration pack

-          A first-aid kit

-          A map and compass

-          Sunscreen and insect repellent (midge repellent - these pesky little critters can be a real pain to hikers across Scotland!)

-          A headlamp or flashlight

-          Toiletries

-          Snacks and food for the trail

Handy Packing Tips

Here are a few packing tips to help you make the most of your long-distance walk in Scotland:

-          Pack light. The lighter your pack, the easier it will be to carry.

-          Choose gear that's durable and weather resistant.

-          Pack a variety of clothing so that you can layer as needed.

-          Pack a first-aid kit and be prepared for anything.

-          Label your gear so that you can easily find it.

Now, this packing list is just a starting point. The specific items you need will depend on the time of year, the length of your walk, and your personal preferences. However, these are all the essential items that you'll need to pack for a long-distance walk in Scotland.
